De stad Chicago is een stad met een zeer rijke blueshistorie. In de 50’s en 60’s dook de ene na de andere platenmaatschappij op om bluesplaten uit te brengen. De meest bekende labels zijn Chess, Vee-Jay, Brunswick en Delmark. Daarnaast waren er ook de nodige onafhankelijke labels, die nooit de erkenning kregen, die zij wél verdienden. Eén van die labels was het Bea & Baby label. Een label, dat werd opgezet door producer Narvel Eatmon, beter bekend als “Cadillac Baby”. Niet alleen hield hij zich bezig met de blues maar produceerde hij ook soul, gospel, comedy en, eind jaren ’80, zelfs hip-hop. Cadillac Baby bezat ook een eigen nachtclub, Cadillac Baby’s Show Lounge, waar, uiteraard, een Cadillac het podium opgereden werd.
Na het overlijden van Cadillac Baby nam Earwig Records de rechten van het Bea & Baby label over van Cadillac’s weduwe. Labeleigenaar Michael Robert Frank besloot om een zeer uitvoerige verzamelaar uit te brengen met alle releases, die ooit op dit label verschenen.
Qua artiesten loopt het uiteen van de meer bekende bluesartiesten als Eddie Boyd, Earl Hooker, Sunnyland Slim, Homesick James, Hound Dog Taylor, Andre Williams, James Cotton en Sleepy John Estes tot obscure blues, soul en gospelartiesten.
Van de bekende bluesartiesten vormen de opgeruimde shuffle Thank You Baby van Eddie Boyd, Dynamite van Earl Hooker met zijn harde priemende gitaar, Hound Dog Taylor en zijn gemeen snijdende slide in o.a. My Baby Is Coming Home, de intense pianoblues van Sunnyland Slim in Worried About My Baby, Andre Williams met zijn breekbare doo-wop-achtige Please Give Me A Chance, de scheurende harmonica van James Cotton in One More Mile, de rauwe slide van Homesick James in het stuwende My Baby’s Gone en de pure countryblues van Sleepy John Estes & Hammie Nixon in Cadillac Baby de hoogtepunten.
Van de minder bekende artiesten springt onder andere gitarist L.C. McKinley eruit. Hij werkte in het verleden met Eddie Boyd en Ernest Cotton. Zijn Nitwit is een sprankelend jumpbluesnummer met warm gitaarspel. Ook zanger Bobby Saxton’s Trying To Make A Living is een hoogtepunt. Dat komt mede door Earl Hooker’s priemende gitaar. Mack Simmons duikt in allerlei gedaantes op op deze verzamelaar, zoals als Little Mac in de pompende shuffle Times Are Getting Tougher, of als St. Louis Mac in de prachtige slowblues You Mistreated Me.
Bizar zijn de nummers van T. Valentine. Een zanger die in de 80’s een single met de titel “Hello Lucille Are You A Lesbian?” opnam. Zijn bizarre doo-wop in Little Lu-Lu Frog is echt hilarisch.
In totaal staan er 101 songs op deze verzamelaar. Te veel dus om stuk voor stuk te noemen.
De twee tracks van de hip-hop formatie 3D dienen echter wel vermeld te worden. Deze vallen op deze box namelijk totaal uit de toon. In positieve zin zijn de gesproken bijdragen van Cadillac Baby zeker het vermelden waard. Hij vertelt op een zeer humoristische manier de geschiedenis van het Bea & Baby label en zijn rol daarin. Dat geldt ook voor de soul-jazz van Andrew “Blueblood” McMahon en de gospelartiesten die ook op deze verzamelaar vertegenwoordigd zijn.
Deze zeer luxe box op het Earwig label zou eigenlijk bij iedereen in huis moeten staan!!
