“Producer Andreas Werner wanted to record me like I play live. Just sit down in front of the mics and play. And that’s what I did. So what you got here is the ‘no frills’ raw blues feeling caught in the moment.” Meer heeft Doug MacLeod zelf niet te zeggen over ‘Raw Blues 1’, zijn nieuwe album.
In principe correct, maar om de omschrijving te kunnen plaatsen, moet je wel enigszins bekend zijn met de muziek van MacLeod. En dat kan makkelijk, want hij heeft een kleine twintig albums op zijn naam heeft staan. Opvallend in die lijst is het album ‘The Utrecht Sessions’. Tel daarbij op dat hij regelmatig in Nederland optreedt en de conclusie is gerechtvaardigd dat hij misschien niet bekend is bij ‘het grote publiek’, maar naar alle waarschijnlijkheid wél bij het -veel minder grote- bluespubliek. ‘Blues artist Doug MacLeod earned an international reputation and won multiple awards for his tough, fleet-fingered guitar playing…and fluid bottleneck solos, …as well as his impassioned and soulful vocal style. MacLeod most often performs on acoustic guitar, but he’s also well-versed in electric styles …and magazine columnist.
…when MacLeod was in his teens, he became a frequent visitor to St. Louis’ blues clubs, and he learned from veteran artists like Albert King, Little Milton, and Ike & Tina Turner.
…Stationed in the navy in Norfolk, Virginia, he spent his off-base hours playing in the local blues venues, developing a unique and rhythmic country blues acoustic guitar style often abetted with intricate bottleneck slide runs, and a soulful and powerfully immediate vocal style.
Vanaf 1984 maakt MacLeod albums, de meeste akoestisch, maar soms ook met een band.
‘2022’s A Soul to Claim was named one of the best albums of the year by the influential jazz magazine Downbeat, and in March 2023, he released the first in a series of EPs, ‘Raw Blues 1’, that captured him performing solo acoustic live in the studio, with no edits or overdubs.’
En dat is wat de EP ’Raw Blues 1’ dus is: blues zonder opsmuk, ontdaan van alle fratsen: gewoon één man en één gitaar. Daarmee is ‘Raw Blues 1’ niet erg geschikt als muziek voor in de auto en nog minder als achtergrondmuziek.
MacLeod is, behalve een begenadigd gitarist (veel slide, veel resonator), ook een man met een fraaie stem, vaak met een verhalende zangstijl, doorspekt met droge humor. Als je de rust en het geduld kunt opbrengen MacLeod bij je thuis geconcentreerd te beluisteren, heb je een fijn privéconcertje tot je beschikking.
