The Mississippi Saxophone. Zo werd de mondharmonica met ontzag en respect genoemd, al lang voordat Jason Ricci geboren werd. Op het album dat Ricci onlangs samen met toetsenist Joe Krown opnam voor Gulf Coast Records, benadrukt deze geuzennaam nog eens ondubbelzinnig. Het zou trouwens heel goed kunnen zijn dat hij Mississippi Saxophone veel meer een eretitel vindt voor de mondharmonica die hij gebruikt. Wat een misthoorngeluid tovert hij uit dit minuscule instrument! Het geluid heeft weinig van het subtiele en ingetogen geluid van mondharmonicavirtuoos Toots Tielemans, maar des te meer van de blaaskracht van een powersaxofonist als Clarence Clemons.
Voor Gulf Coast Records maakte Ricci ’City Country City’, een album met op orgel en piano Hammond B3 beest Joe Krown en op drums Doug Belote als swingende, soepel shuffelende New Orleans drummer.
Het album bevat zeven instrumentale en vijf vocale nummers. Die verhouding had anders gemogen, want de vocale nummers laten horen dat Ricci een lekkere rauwe stem heeft, in de beste traditie van New Orleans shouters als Screaming Jay Hawkins en Professor Longhair en in de verte ook een beetje Tom Waits.
Track drie (Badger The Witness) is daar een mooi voorbeeld van. Een super swingend instrumentaal stuk is The Jimmy Smith Strut, Ricci’s versie van Taj Mahal’s Strut, te vinden op diens album ‘Dancing The Blues’ (1993) en op ‘Dot Com Blues’ (2000) in de versie van naamgever Jimmy Smith.
Drummer Doug Belote legt in bijna ieder nummer een heerlijk shuffelend New Orleans tapijtje klaar, waarop Ricci en Krown van harte los kunnen gaan. En dat doen ze dus ook! Opvallende cover is slotnummer Ode to Billy Joe van Bobby Gentry.
’City Country City’ heeft de sound van een heerlijk ouderwets orgel/harmonicatrio, zoals dat in de sixties te vinden was bij Steve Rowland & Family Dog, The Peddlers en Brian Auger. Het grote verschil is dat Jason Ricci en Joe Krown de jazzy invloeden de deur uit gedaan hebben en er vette New Orleansfunk voor in de plaats hebben gezet.

Niet in de laatste plaats omdat Gulf Coast Records gevestigd is in het Texaanse plaatsje Nederland, geef ik hen het laatste woord om in lekker bekkend Amerikaans nog wat meer over het album te vertellen.

Harmonica player/singer Jason Ricci is a multiple Blues Music Award-winner, while organ/piano player Joe Krown has legendary Crescent City credentials and is currently the keyboardist in Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s band. Together, they team up as Ricci/Krown on their new CD, City Country City, a retro soul-infused outing that features Jason’s gutsy vocals and stellar harmonica, overlaid with Joe’s melodic and earthy organ playing.
