Nick Moss, (15 december 1969 Chicago, Illinois), begint zijn muzikale carrière als bassist in de band van Buddy Scott. Daarna speelt hij bas bij Jimmy Dawkins en in 1993 bij The Legendary Blues Band. Willy “Big Eyes” Smith van The Legendary Blues Band adviseert Moss om over te schakelen naar de gitaar. Moss volgt dat advies op en vervolgens is hij ook enkele jaren gitarist in de band van Jimmy Rogers.
Na drie jaar Jimmy Rogers begint Moss aan een solocarrière. In 2003 komt zijn debuutalbum ‘First Offence’ uit, onder de naam Nick Moss & The Flip Tops. In 2009 verandert hij de naam in The Nick Moss Band (NMB). De band sleept e nodige prijzen in de wacht. Hun album ‘Here I Am’ wordt in 2013 genomineerd in de categorie Rock Blues Album en ‘Time Ain’t Free wordt in 2014 door Guitar World Magazine gekozen in de Top 50 Albums van 2014. In 2019 wordt Nick Moss uitgeroepen tot ‘Traditional blues male artist of the year’.
Sinds 2016 is de uit New Jersey afkomstige mondharmonicavirtuoos Dennis Gruenling actief in de Nick Moss Band. Het eerste album met Gruenling, ‘Lucky Guy!’, wordt in 2020 door AllMusic gekozen tot ‘Favorite blues album’ en in mei van datzelfde jaar winnen zij twee bluesmusic awards voor ‘Band of the year’ en ‘Traditional blues album of the year’ voor ‘Lucky Guy!’.
Volgende maand verschijnt ‘Get Your Back Into It!’, het nieuwe album van de Nick Moss Band, feat. Dennis Gruenling. Een album met 14 originele songs (12 van Moss en 2 van Gruenling), geproduceerd door Nick Moss en Rodrigo Mantovani.
Het album opent met de single The Bait Is In The snare. Heerlijk uptempo swingend met gitaar, sax en scheurende mondharp. Na de midtempo blues Aurelie gaat de band helemaal los in het titelnummer Get Your Back Into It. Dampende Chicago blues met felle gitaarlicks, een scheurende mondharp en een tinkelende pianosolo.
Man On The Move is ook weer swingende Chicago blues. Dennis Gruenling is geweldig op dreef in de fraaie strakke slowblues Living In Heartache. Fraai zijn de bastonen van Rodrigo Mantovani in de soulblues It Shocks Me Out, waarin Moss weer een staaltje van zijn grote gitaarkunsten laat horen. Een mooie gastrol op orgel is er voor ‘brother’ John Kattke in de uptempo jazzy instrumental Out Of The Woods.
Choose Wisely is soulvol gezongen klassieke R&B met een spetterende gitaarsolo en een huilende mondharp. Gruenling pakt weer de hoofdrol in de John Lee Hooker-achtige boogie Your Bark Is Worse Than Your Bite en in het met een verschroeiende gitaarsolo versierde Losing Ground.
Het latin-achtige Bones Cantina is een vrolijke uptempo instrumental met twangy gitaar en strak drumwerk. De geest van Junior Wells waart rond in de klassieke Chicago blues Lonely Fool. Na de funky soulblues The Solution, wordt het album afgesloten met de fantastische surf-achtige instrumental Scratch And Sniff met een prominente rol voor saxofonist Gordon Beadle.
Conclusie:
‘Get Your Back Into It!’ is een schitterend opwindend authentiek Chicago bluesalbum.
