You’ve Got To Stand For Something
John Cougar Mellencamp is misschien wel de belichaming van Heartland Rock. Voor een groot deel van de Amerikaanse bevolking op eenzelfde wijze als dat wij daarvoor naar Springsteen kijken wanneer we muziek over het land van onbegrensde mogelijkheden willen luisteren. Het leven van de gewone werkende burger gevangen in thema’s die aansluiten op het dagelijkse bestaan. Het is een ogenschijnlijk simpele invalshoek maar het zo vertalen dat het op zeer succesvolle schaal aanslaat is een kunstvorm op zich.
Een van de meer succesvollere albums van Mellencamp, zijn achtste studioplaat om precies te zijn, is het uit 1985 stammende ‘Scarecrow’. Hier geen typische jaren tachtig geluiden maar gewoon recht vooruit gaande Amerikaanse rock, wars van fratsen.
Het midden van de jaren tachtig was een roerige periode in Amerika, het lande kende een hoog begrotingstekort dat leidde tot grote bezuinigingen en een oplopende mate van sociale onvrede die voor een tijdsgewricht zorgde waarin ‘Scarecrow’ het uitstekend zou doen. Met drie top tien singles en een kleine zes miljoen verkochte albums belande het album uiteindelijk op de dertiende plaats in het overzicht van best verkochte platen van dat jaar.
Hoe blijft zo’n album na een slordige 37 jaar dan overeind, heel aardig is de conclusie. Juist door er toen voor te kiezen om weg te blijven van typische 80’s geluiden staat er nu nog steeds een sterke plaat waarvan de behandelde thema’s in sommige gevallen zelfs pijnlijk actueel blijven anno 2022.
Op deze uitgave krijgen we niet alleen een nieuwe mix te horen maar ook een aantal demo’s, grove mixen en andere extra’s die er goed in gaan. Under The Boardwalk van The Drifters bijvoorbeeld. Mellencamp die er zo zachtjes tegen aan glijd alsof hij nooit anders gedaan heeft.
Dat de man zijn sporen in de geschiedenis van Amerikaanse muziek ruimschoots verdiend heeft wordt met deze uitgave nog maar eens terecht onderstreept, de Scarecrow staat nog overeind en vol trots. On the land of hope and dreams.
