Vorig jaar verscheen het eerste album van Luther Black And The Cold Hard Facts. Puik album, voor liefhebbers van zorgvuldig gemaakte, sfeervolle ‘countrypop-achtige, rock/singersongwriter muziek’, schreef ik toen (www.bluestownmusic.nl/recensie-luther-black-and-the-cold-hard-facts-luther-black-and-the-cold-hard-facts/)
Na de single Heartbreak Lullaby verscheen onlangs een nieuwe single, Alamo Way. Het is te hopen dat het niet bij een paar singles blijft, maar dat Rick Wagner -want zo heet Luther Black- ons binnenkort ook een volledig album voorschotelt.
Alamo Way is wederom een prima countryrock getint stukje Americana. Overtuigend gespeeld en gezongen. Wagners stem blijft een genoegen om naar te luisteren. Zonder vocale fratsen of krachtpatserij neemt hij je -met behulp van zijn lage fluistertimbre- mee naar stoffige Amerikaanse verten. De open productie en de zacht pulserende gitaarstrum zijn de opmaat naar de gitaarsolo. Kort, weinig noten, maar wel allemaal raak, klinkend als een gepolijste solo van Neil Young ten tijde van Crazy Horse.
In het lange outtro is een belangrijke rol weggelegd voor vurige, furieuze female vocals. Over Alamo Way zegt Wagner zelf: “A mid-tempo rocker with Americana overtones, the song steadily builds to an emotional, triumphant crescendo thanks to a dazzling guest backup vocal performance by NYC soul singer Brandi Thompson”.
Verrassend is de B-kant van de single: Most Of The Time, een van de fraaiste tracks van Dylans album ‘Oh Mercy’ (1989). Wagner is bewust dicht bij de klank gebleven die producer Daniel Lanois aan ‘Oh Mercy’ gaf. “Daniel Lanois’ production on the original is so great in creating the perfect atmosphere for the song. I tried to stay true to that and not reinvent the wheel, but to pay homage to this great piece of art.”
