From the lushly forested and rocky shores of Pender Island, British Columbia,Peach & Quiet is a Canadian West Coast singer-songwriter duo known for their authenticity, poetic lyrics and gorgeous harmonies. Partners in music and in life, Heather Read and Jonny Miller have a warm, atmospheric roots sound that has built them a devoted following in Vancouver Island’s music scene.

Their debut album Just Beyond the Shine, an intriguing and delightful variety of original songs recorded during the depths of the continuing pandemic, explores the dark and light sides of love and the unwavering commitment to remain true to the heart in the face of all odds. Ranging in style across vintage country, Americana and folk rock, their music is sweetly captivating, reminding us that it is the fearless exploration of our own hearts that will lead us forward into a sustainable and kinder world.

The talented duo are backed on the album by some of the most respected musicians of the Canadian indie folk/roots and West Coast scenes including the inimitable guitar wizard and multi-instrumentalist Steve Dawson of Henhouse Studios in Nashville, who also produced and played on the majority of the album, alongside regular cohorts Jeremy Holmes and Gary Craig. Elsewhere the much-lauded Adam Dobres (Wailin’ Jennys, Ruth Moody) features on and produced ‘For My Love’ and ‘Will You’.

Bio

Jonny is a singer-songwriter and staple of the British Columbia music for over 30 years. Born to consciousness-raising parents who were involved in the activist scene on the west coast, the electric cocktail of music and social change is in his blood. Raised by his mom, the first female radio engineer in Canada who worked at a local Co-op Radio, she regularly invited musicians back to their home, hosting intense and lively discussions around social awareness. Jonny’s dad is a Reggae DJ in the US who introduced Jonny to the California rock and reggae scene as a young man.

Welsh-born Heather was singing with her dad’s band in legion halls in Ontario, Canada when she was just four years old and writing songs when she was seven. Heather put her music on hold after her childhood, but brought it out again when she moved to BC in 2013 and enjoyed what was called a “meteoric rise” in the local Victoria folk scene, founding two bands – Wayward Sirens and Clancy’s Front Porch, before meeting Jonny in 2019 and forming Peach & Quiet. By day, Heather runs a book agency that offers publishers access to local community bookstores across BC, Alberta and the North. She has spent decades volunteering in various roles relating to social justice, community building and social activism, and has an interdisciplinary Master’s degree in Community Sustainability in a Global Context. Her keystone project work took her to India, where she focussed on the role of book publishers as agents of social change.
