De band uit Kentucky had The Human Condition net een paar dagen klaar toen de lokale COVID-19 maatregelen werden opgelegd, en alles werd afgesloten. Naarmate de tijd vorderde, werd duidelijk dat de teksten van het album een griezelig vooruitziende blik hadden.
“There was a real urgency and fear of the unknown during those sessions – it was a scary time,” herinnert drummer John Fred Young zich. “Every song on this album tells a story of the experiences we all go through – our happiness, our struggles, and how we have to adapt.”
Het album opent met de tekst: “People, people, your attention please, I need to tell you about a new disease” (van Ringin’ In My Head). Het nummer was al 4 jaar geleden geschreven, maar het vat krachtig de hysterie rond het uitbreken van de COVID-19 crisis samen. “Push Down & Turn” heeft de dynamiek van ruimte aan de ene kant en zompige metal aan de andere kant. Het meeslepende nummer gaat over geestelijke gezondheid, en pleit ervoor dat mensen hulp moeten zoeken als ze problemen hebben. “I suffer from manic depression and I have severe anxiety. I want to convey it’s okay to go to a doctor and talk about these issues. There is no shame or stigma there,” deelt zanger/gitarist Chris Robertson.
The Human Condition is door de band geproduceerd, en opgenomen in Monocle Studios, de studio van bassist Jon Lawhon. De mannen hadden al 4 nummers af, schreven een paar nieuwe nummers terwijl ze bezig waren in de studio, en namen daarnaast een paar van hun favoriete, niet eerder uitgebrachte nummers op. De band koos er ook voor om het album op een andere manier vast te leggen. Normaal gesproken werd eerst de basis opgenomen, maar nu werden alle partijen van het begin af aan minutieus op meerdere sporen gezet. Ieder bandlid onderging slopende opnamesessies om te voldoen aan “epic performances” die de band zich als doel had gesteld. Het resultaat mag er zijn: de groove is organisch, de riffs zijn kolossaal, de uitvoering is direct en to-the-point, en de nummers zijn aanstekelijk. Qua geluid is The Human Condition één van BSC’s rauwste en meest catchy releases. Gitarist/vocalist Ben Wells legt uit, “With this one, we cranked up the amps, the drums are in your face, and there are some really heavy riffs. After 19 years and 7 albums, we wanted to prove that we still kick ass. This album feels like a rebirth.”
“When I listen back to this record, I feel all these different emotions,” aldus Jon Lawhon. “We started when we were teens, and life has taken its course, especially now. Through it all, your heart and your perspectives change, but one thing that hasn’t changed is our connection as friends.” Chris bevestigt: “This is a brotherhood. It’s been amazing to stick around with all four original members and still be inspired. Here’s to 7 more albums and another 19 years!”
